The Highlander Centre is located high in the mountain region of Central Luzon in Benguet Province, gateway to the World Heritage listed 'Banaue Rice Terraces', which were built by the ancestors of these children, the Igorot Indians. Their are, at present 87 children enrolled at the centre which has one full time teacher, and plenty of helpful Moms. Being in a rare cold region of the Philippines due to altitude, it is also imperative that we send as much warm clothing as we can, for both the children and their families. These wonderful people live in Camp8 in Baguio City, often referred to as the 'Summer Capital' of the Philippines, due to it's mild temperature it is an escape from the warm summers of Manila. Baguio City has been in complete lockdown for some months now, the entire Philippines have had to wear masks and face shields since March 2020 whenever outside their homes, this also includes wherever they go to inside as well. Please also remember that Welfare does not exist in the Philippines.
The Maliyaa Foundation have had to change their donation recipients since 2020. Like many charities and businesses, we also need to diversify and help those most in need during these trying times. It has been impossible for our Founder to visit schools within Australia to ask for donation of school supplies, uniforms and toys for the struggling end-of-road schools in the rural Philippines. Hence, we have had the opportunity to take on three major projects which are very dear to our hearts at Maliyaa. After many months of tracking down and finding contacts, we are very pleased to finally have the Reception and Study Centre for Children (Orphanage) from La Trinidad in Benguit Province as a major project. Also, the Home for Girls in Agoo, La Union Provice, and the Haven for Women in Dagupan City, Pangasinan Province.
Like many counties, the Philippines have given priority to the most vulnerable for Covid vaccination. Our #1 volunteer, Nick Gapuz from Camp8 in Baguio City, has luckily received both doses to achieve full vaccination. However, like most of the developing and poor nations around the world, vaccine availability is extremely scarce, once again the Western World show themselves as greedy hoarders, showing no compassion for anyone other than themselves. There is no Welfare in the Philippines, the Government have tried to dole out some assistance wherever possible and provided food for local barangays (suburbs) to dispense food within their communities, but things are tough, young Nick has not been out of the house for many months now, but unlike his Western counterparts, Nick is happy to stay home and keep himself and his family safe.
Our latest project is in the Benguet Province, a mountainous region and home to the Igorot Indians. we have finally been able to contact the La Trinidad Reception and Study Centre for Children which is now temporarily based in the Provincial Capital of Baguio City. There are a total of 18 children in attendance at the moment, 6 babies, 4 toddlers, 7 from 5-8, and one young teenager at 13. These wonderful children are either abandoned, the victims of child abuse, or mistreatment. We have already had the opportunity to send off some much needed clothes, shoes, large toys for a playroom situation, outdoor games, puzzles and teddy bears for the cherished little ones. If anyone would like to help the maliyaa foundation help these precious children, we are currently in the hunt for more baby clothes, nappies, moisturisers, shampoos and body lotions.
The Girl's Home is situated in Agoo, in the Province of La Union, in the Northern Part of main island Luzon. These wonderful kids are under care as a result of ongoing child abuse and sexual assault. The Home gives them the security that they need, loving care and the opportunity to receive an education. It is the job of the maliyaa foundation to make this time of their lives to be as enjoyable as is possible. We will soon be sending them an assortment of Australian band t-shirts, other clothing and shoes, toys and games, educational supplies and grooming aids. If anyone would like to help us, to help these cherished young ladies, please contact us immediately. There are presently 30 young girls in care, aged from 7 to 17, and 7 baby boys, including 2 babies under 4 months.

It is with great esteem that the Maliyaa Foundation has the opportunity to help The Haven for Women, located in Dagupan City, in the Province of Pangasinan. This great institution helps young ladies and women return to a somewhat normal life after being victims of sexual abuse and being lured into the sex trade. These woman now feel safe again, and our mission is to let them know that others care about them also. There are presently 11 residents aged from 18 to 30, and 3 residents aged between 31 and 45, also one child 5 years age, 3 toddlers and 4 infants. Our first donations will be to send a large assortment of Australian band tour shirts for residents and staff, shampoos and grooming aids, as well as shoes and an assortment of clothing for all the ladies and children. We will also send some toys and cuddly bears for the little ones as well. Please contact us, if you can help in any way, together we can give these women some self esteem and happiness again.
All Australian Schools, Colleges, Service Clubs and Sporting Clubs are invited to Recycle for Education. Schools can place donation boxes in each classroom for students to bring in old school supplies, ill fitting or unwanted clothing and shoes, unused sports equipment and toys. Colleges can provide old text books, school supplies and unwanted or out of date clothing or shoes, even old laptops and mobiles. Service Clubs help many in our communities, but many members have grown up children or grandchildren who have plenty of toys and clothes that they no longer use, these are all very much appreciated and loved by our poor children. If you, your school or organisation would like to participate in any way possible, please contact us at info@maliyaa.org
